Press Release: Climate Camp Aotearoa

For immediate release 10 December 2009

DIY Climate Action arrives in Upper Hutt

Inspired by climate camps held in the UK and Australia, the very first Camp for Climate Action Aotearoa will take place at Moonshine Park, Upper Hutt from 16th - 22nd December.

"While governments are busy talking in Copenhagen, Climate Camp will be a place where we can address the real causes of climate change and take action,” said Michelle Ducat, a participant in the camp from the Hutt Valley.

It is expected that over 200 people from all over the country will come along to the camp to learn and share skills, take action and form the foundation for a strong climate justice movement in New Zealand.

“Everyone is welcome. We’d love it if people from the local area popped in,” said Ducat. “There will be lots to see and do for the whole family. The Camp will use environmentally friendly technologies like solar power, composting toilets, recycling and grey water systems. There will be heaps of free workshops too, ranging from insulating your home to the history of direct action in Aotearoa.”

The Camp will culminate in a Day of Action in Wellington city. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice techniques, and then together plan actions to target those they say are profiting from climate change and carbon markets.

"After years of talk and no decrease in emissions, we can’t rely on government, big business or corporations to do it for us - we have to do it ourselves," said Ducat. “History has shown non-violent direct action is an effective part of social change. Climate Camp is a place we can learn about the issues and ways we can create change.”
